A Boundless Perseverance Story: Mya the Professional

The moon was visible in the sky, and the night air was cool after such a heated day. Mya sat at a beautifully adorned table with pastel candles and foliage to celebrate the birth of one of Mya’s best friends’ daughters. Of the seven women who grew up together from grammar school through high school, Mya was the only one still single. While they all had wonderful careers, Maya was at the top of hers.

When it came to her travels and her business connections, she was the envy of her friend group. At any point in time, she could pick up and wisk off to another country and sip wine in the countryside, or smooze with the elite in the backdrop of a rustic city. After graduation, Mya was hired at a top company in the metro area.
Mya loved her job, and her paycheck was proof that she was the creme de la creme. She was very ambitious, and as a result, her résumé grew with every promotion. With every new job title, she felt she needed to surpass her last accomplishments, so she continued to work harder and achieved even more.
As she looked around the table, though, she also saw her friends who had accomplished just as much as she had while finding time to date, form connections, marry, and have children. They were full entities, and Mya was still moving as a lone star. Bright like the north star, but alone nevertheless.
Maya checked the boxes she was told mattered. Yet every accomplishment left her feeling emptier than the one before. Sitting alone at the table, while friends talked about familial milestones, she realized something heartbreaking. Mya had spent years building a life she could survive, but not a life she could feel.
The next morning, nothing around her had changed. The job was the same. Her routine was the same. The responsibilities were the same. But one thing was different. She began defining stability by how she felt inside, not by the things she accomplished outside.
Little by little, she found herself more solid than she had ever been. When she smiled, it now radiated through her entire body, not just her lips. People around her noticed a change, but could not quite put their finger on it. Her title hadn’t changed, nor had her paycheck. But she glowed in a way that made everyone stop and mirror.
Sometimes perseverance isn’t holding on to what you’ve built. Sometimes it’s having the courage to rebuild from the inside out.
