Why Healing is Loving Yourself First

I never really noticed it until I had children. Before that, putting others first was just… life. A habit that came and went, sometimes unnoticed, sometimes expected. But with motherhood, it became 24/7, a constant rhythm that left little room for me. And for the first time, I realized something important: my anxiety wasn’t coming from my children—it was showing me a truth I had been avoiding for years. I had always overextended myself for everyone around me, running myself on empty in the name of niceness, duty, and love.

When I finally recognized that, everything changed. I knew I couldn’t keep pouring from an empty cup—not for my own sanity, and certainly not for my children’s. I had to set boundaries. And setting those boundaries was uncomfortable at first. Suddenly, the people around me seemed to notice—sometimes in ways that stung. Some said I was impatient. Others seemed frustrated that I was “less available” than I had been. But what I learned is that I wasn’t impatient at all. I had simply run out of patience because I had overextended myself for so long.

Healing, I realized, starts with loving yourself first. It means giving yourself permission to care for your needs, to honor your limits, and to say no when it matters. Loving yourself first doesn’t mean you love others less—it means you are strong enough to show up for them without losing yourself in the process.

This is a journey, and I’m still on it. I still have days when old habits creep back in, when I feel the pull to say yes even when I shouldn’t. But each day, I practice showing up for myself first, and the more I do, the more aligned, resilient, and whole I feel.

I share this not to say that loving yourself is easy, but to inspire you to do the same. The path to healing, to presence, and to true joy often begins with one radical act: choosing yourself.

I’ve poured my experiences, reflections, and practices into Boundless Perseverance, a guide for anyone

ready to commit to growth, alignment, and self-care. If you’re ready to start prioritizing your own healing and take intentional steps toward loving yourself fully, I hope you’ll join me on this journey.

Your healing matters. Start with you, and watch how it transforms everything else.
